Where to report

Observed or suspected child abuse or neglect may be reported to the local police/law enforcement authority. If the local law enforcement authority is Berkeley UCPD, please call 510-642-6760.

When reporting is required

For everyone:

The California Penal Code requires any person who reasonably believes they have observed murder, rape, or lewd or lascivious acts where the victim is age 14 or younger to promptly notify law enforcement authorities.

For Mandated Reporters:

Who is a Mandated Reporter?

People whose duties, either as an employee or volunteer, at UC Berkeley involve any of the following are classified as Mandated Reporters, and must report suspected or observed child abuse or neglect:

  • Direct or indirect contact with minors
  • Supervision of minors
  • Supervision of other Mandated Reporters or employees who come into regular contact with minors
  • Work in areas where minors are regularly present
  • Athletic coaching

Please note: certain individuals are also Mandated Reporters due to their licensure or profession, such as medical professionals, social workers, and mental health counselors. 

What is a Mandated Reporter required to do?

Mandated Reporters must report in all of the following ways:

  1. Immediately notify the local law enforcement authorities and your supervisor. If the local law enforcement authority is Berkeley UCPD, please call 510-642-6760.
  2. Submit Internal Report online to the University Whistleblower Hotline (or call 800-403-4744 (711 CA Relay Service)). Please write down the Report Key you receive.
  3. Submit a CANRA Report within 36 hours to authorities. *Include the Report Key in your report.*

Informal summary

The UC Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect policy requires certain employees and volunteers, known as Mandated Reporters, to report observed or suspected child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities and their supervisor, submit an internal report to the University, and complete a CANRA report within 36 hours.
